Task 2 - Job Roles

Creative Development;

Game Designer;

A Game Designer is a person or team of people, who would apply the art and aesthetics to create a game. Game Design can be applied to games and other forms of interaction like Virtual Reality (V.R).

The job role itself focuses on multiple areas of a game for example the gameplay, environment, storyline and characters. To complete all of these parts in a reasonable time limit then a company would hire many of theses 'Game Designers' to work on all these areas at the same time.

A games designer will produce the initial game idea document that will have the concept, gameplay, setting and story, schedule and budgets. They can also take on another role in the industry like a level designer or an artist to create an environment or characters.

Level Editor;

Once again, a Level Editor is a person or team of people that focus on the creation of the map in a video game and the campaign within it. To allow a employee to create these they would need certain software like Adobe product, Illustrator/Photoshop and a program like Unity to allow them to create the maps for the game.

Lead Artists;

A Lead Artist is a person who will take control of a group of artists and assign them different roles to get the artwork complete quicker and more efficiently. A good Lead Artist would know his team well and know what they are all individually good at for example a person is extremely good at making environments and not so much characters then you would assign them the task to do the environment. 

They also are there to receive information from the creative director and then they would relay that information to his team, they would also need to create artwork of their own and keep checking up on his team to see what they have/haven't done to then maybe assign someone else on to it as well.

Example;

The Lead Artist created this but they would focus more on the commanding of their team.
Technical Artist;

A Technical Artist is the role of compiling the game with all the assets and all the other parts of the game. This task can be rather hard if they are under a time limit as they need to put everything together and make sure it works. This job is a role that requires communication throughout the whole team so whenever any assets are finished it allows the Technical Artist to start making the game.

Artist;

A Video Game Artist is a person who creates game assets that will be compiled later by the Technical Artist. A artist can make anything that you see in a game, this is from pixel art to vector images and even 3D models that require more skill and time devotion.

The art in a video game can be of a 2D or 3D standard. Many games nowadays focus on 3D as it is the the way the public expect new games to be rather than a 2D game as people see this style as old. There is an increase in the amount of game being created for V.R (Virtual Reality) however it isn't the main focus for company yet.

Animator;

An Animator is another form of an artist, who will create multiple images that are known as frames which leads people to think that the images are moving when these are being played in a rapid sequence. Animations can be used in a variety of jobs that include, Televisions, Film and Video Games.

To be an Animator, it takes a lot of patience to be good at this job. Depending on the project at hand it may require multiple people to work in collaboration to finishes in the required time limit.

Audio Engineer;

As an Audio Engineer, your job would be to record, edit and manipulate sounds to be used in projects like video games or films. Audio Engineer's also work on the technical side of sound recording such as the placing of the mics etc...

They use software sequencing programs to help create their desired sounds with ease, within these programs you can install plug-ins that can help modify tracks and give so many different opinions to help be unique as well as the classic/retro feel as well.

Technical Development;

Game Programmer;  

A Game Programmer is a person who develops codebases for Video Games or other such software like game development tools. There are many types of programmer's such as; Gameplay Programmer, Sound Programmer, Scripter and many more like these.

There are many ways that programmer's code in is also known as a 'Language'. These languages have various names such as C++, C and other assembly languages, They are most used in the programming of video games.

This is a mechanic to allow the player to pick up an item. If you are to pick up one of them the other destroys and vice versa, then if you are to press the button 'E' you can drop the item you are holding.


Lead Game Programmer; 

A Lead Game Programmer has all the qualities as a Game Programmer however, the Lead is the one who takes control of all the people who work as a game programmer. Whoever is in this role will have to get to know their team so they can assign roles to best fit to the teams skills.

They also have the responsibility to receive information from the Creative Director and they having to let their team know what ever is important. This job may say Lead 'Game Programmer' but they may not have that much time to do coding as they have to focus on leading however they do what they can. 

Project Implementation;

Project Manager/Producer;

The Producer is the person who is the overseer of the whole project and is the person who is funding the development of the video game. They have many responsibility's such as pitching game ideas to publishers, Maintaining schedules and budgets, Arranging beta testing and/or focus groups.

For the smaller games, the producer may work closely with the programming and creative staff however, with the larger games the producer will need assistance from the leads as their is a wider range of jobs and more people to control. 

Assistant Producer;

The Assistant Producer will be the one who the project manager will refer to for help and advice with important decisions. They could help with the budgeting and help with creating ideas to then present to publishers with the Project Manager.

External Producer;

Most game are made by third-party developers, in which case an external producer could be hired. The External Producer or also known as Executive Producer and they are normally hired by the game's publisher. 

The External Producer mainly focuses on overseeing several projects also they get information on how the game development is going and then keeping the upper management informed on the progress.

Creative Director;

The Creative Director is someone who works closely to the game developing staff mainly to the leads of each work area to find out the progress/problems that the staff may be struggling with. They also have the responsibility to inform the leads if there has been any changes to ideas from the project managers. 

Quality Assurance;

QA Tester;

A QA Tester is a person who will test the video game to prevent mistakes/bugs being released with the game that may have a negative impact in the public's eye. This job is a very time consuming role as it requires a person to play through the game multiple times.

If a bug is found in a game then the person who found it must write a report then will be sent back to one of the developers to then look into it further to fix said bug.

This is a QA form I filled out when I tested the game Mekka Hornet.


Business Development;

Public Relations Manager;

A Public Relations Manager will manage the spread through an organisation or the public. They go and research the things that are the most popular by the general public. The main purpose for a Public Relations is to inform the public, investors,employees, stakeholders and other people like these to ultimately help these people maintain a good view about the organisation.

To be a good Public Relations Manager then you must have a good ability to write and speak to impress the people that your organisation is targeting (Target Audience). 

Product Manager;

A Product Manager will help drive the development stage in the right way. They also look at various things like the competitions products and how well this product fits in with the company's business model.

This job role also means that they help drive the staff to get the the end of the product making by giving motivation to all the workers to help them all work in cohesion and also to reminded them on the end goal, the finished product. 

Marketing Executive;

The Marketing Executive will be involved in the creating of advertising the product to generate a base level of excitement. This job role may be quite challenging and can also be very fast-paced.

They have many responsibility's ranging from managing budgets, supporting the marketing manager, organizing and attending events like conferences. However, the responsibility's vary depending on the size of the product being made and the organisations budget. 

Marketing Manager;

A Marketing Manager is someone who will take care of the marketing side of a product. They will create the propaganda to help advertise the public about the product that will be released sometime soon. They will work in small teams to create advertisements, from these advertisements they can test the public's interest for the product. 

They also help create 'Hype' which is a term for excitement which can be very useful as the more hype the more people are interested in your product and the more profit you will make at the end of the sales period.
